Map Control Touch Targets
WCAG Requirement
Interactive map controls — including zoom buttons, layer toggles, basemap switchers, and popup close buttons — must have a minimum touch target size of 44x44 CSS pixels to be usable on touch devices and by users with motor impairments.
Experience Builder Notes
EB's default map controls generally meet the 44x44 minimum, but custom themes and compact layouts can shrink them. Test on actual mobile devices. Pay special attention to popup close buttons and small toolbar icons in responsive layouts.
Map & GIS Considerations
Map applications are increasingly used on mobile and tablet devices, making touch target size critical. The 44x44px minimum (from WCAG 2.5.5 and mobile best practices) ensures that users with motor impairments, tremors, or limited dexterity can reliably operate map controls. This is especially important for field workers using GIS apps on tablets in challenging conditions. Test map controls on actual touch devices — browser DevTools device emulation does not accurately simulate touch targeting.
Sufficient Techniques
- ✓Ensure all map control buttons are at least 44x44 CSS pixels
- ✓Test on mobile devices at various screen sizes
- ✓Use EB's responsive layout to provide appropriately sized controls per breakpoint
- ✓Avoid overcrowding toolbars — space controls with adequate padding
Common Failures in EB Apps
- ✗Zoom buttons smaller than 44x44 on mobile layouts
- ✗Popup close button too small to tap reliably
- ✗Compact toolbar icons under 44px in responsive view
- ✗Layer toggle checkboxes too small on touch screens
